7/24/2009: Antonio Escalante vs Cornelius Lock
Round 1
Lock working into a rhythm. Inviting Escalante in to throw counters. Landing a few of them very crisply. Antonio hitting a lot of leather and air. Escalante sends a wide lazy underhand shot to the body, Lock goes to counter over it and misses, winds up absorbing the bodyshot, one of a few moments which belie his otherwise good defense.
Escalante gets Lock against the ropes with twenty seconds left, taking the shovel to Cornelius' elbows...too little too late.
10-9 Lock.
Round 2
Escalante looking for an opening, more contemplative in this round. Lock outworks him over the first half with basically a jab alone. Lock warned for low blow. They trade. Lock lands hard to the chest, Escalante comes right back and finds his chin. They go back to circling, closing together every five seconds and exchanging power shots (mostly downstairs).
20-18
Antonio cut by a punch over his left eye.
Good action in the third. Escalante had a big flurry early, then took several power connects. Cornelius circling and jabbing. Escalante lands a crowd-pleasing straight right. Lock back to circling and jabbing. Escalante reaches around him to find his body intermittently. Inactive. for much of middle part of round. Another tight exchange...Lock down! Comes back and meets Escalante in the center of the ring. They battle it out. Lock down again!
10-7 Escalante.
Lock saved by the bell.
28-27 Escalante.
Round 4
Esca creeping in, determined but not unintelligent. Catches some jabs on his glove. Trying to find a way to reach Lock without rushing in blind. Lock, in turn, trying to limit his opportunities, reaching around and smacking Escalante's body himself whenever they draw close. Esca has landed a few nasty penetrating gut shots.
Lock almost down at end of round - looks shaky. Bell sounds. Escalante in a frenzy, keeps hitting him. Cornelius doesn't go down, nods at Antonio.
38-36 Escalante.
Round 5
Lock trying to do too much in there. The jab seems to buy him some distance when he uses it but he keeps changing tack. Tries throwing lead lefts, and Esca punishes him with a power punch to the cheek every time. Escalante dancing on his toes, looks fresher but his mouth is open. Lock lands a nice check hook with about ten seconds left, then they flurry at each other, stumbling sidelong into the ropes to end the round.
Probably an Escalante round.
48-45 Antonio Escalante
Round 6
Escalante chases Lock around, waits for Lock to unload as he's coming in, a little head movement but mainly just willingness to let any incoming offense glance off him, connecting with hard shots to the head and body. Lock successfully counters maybe two or three times all round.
58-54 Escalante
Round 7
Escalante banging away. Even the blocked shots are shaking Lock now. Lock eats a hard hook, goes down a few moments later, ruled a slip. He's tired. Backpedaling. Escalante slips. Lock finally throws a few jabs, gets walked down across the ring and gets drawn into a firefight with his back against the ropes, get the better of it by far with handspeed edge, connecting both under and over the hands of Escalante.
Too little too late for Lock, still an Escalante round based on ring generalship and aggression.
68-63 Escalante
Round 8
Lock looks uncomfortable. Escalante zips in, drops a bomb or three, and resumes his position just outside of jabbing range. Escalante's well conditioned. Slips a few. Much faster and more agile on his feet at this point. Escalante has this weird habit of throwing jabs while Lock's ten feet away. I don't know that you can even call it a feint. Whatever floats his boat. He's winning.
78-72
Fight is escaping Lock.
Round 9
Escalante throwing more ghost-jabs. I'm starting to think this is a symptom of him being more tired than his footwork and cuteness on the inside would lead you to believe. Pace anemic now compared to earlier. Esccalante throws a lazy lead right. Another firefight (Lock gets the better). Lock able to land more in these exchanges due to handspeed but not much on them. Escalanbte misses a ghost-jab. Misses a ghost-lead-right. Dude, he's all the way across the ring, do you need glasses? Escalante mauling Lock. Stops him in his tracks with a straight right. Hunts him across the ring, another big right has Lock pinballing off the ropes. Lock somehow stays on his feet long enough to be saved by the bell one more time.
88-81 Escalante.
Lock wobbly. Still defending himself, but punches are getting through his guard and rocking his world. Escalante not realizing the opportunity he has or he still has respect for a cornered animal. Lock certainly not looking like a comeback threat. They let their hands go, both land, Escalante barely blinks and Lock's head snaps back. This pattern continues. Lock backing up, is pinned on each of the four sets of ropes in succession. Huge flurry from Escalante to finish the round.
Lock is one durable bastard.
98-90 Escalante.
